The mobile phone maker Nokia and software giant Microsoft will form a strategic alliance, a move that will help fight competition from rivals Google and Apple in the smartphone market.

Nokia would adopt Microsoft Windows as the leading smart phone platform. Faced with intense competition from Apple and Google, Nokia has seen large share of the smartphone market going down.

The most recent partnership move comes just months after a former veteran of Microsoft, Stephen Elop took the reins of Nokia.

Along with Microsoft search engine Bing facilities and services, Nokia will continue to cooperate in joint marketing initiatives. In addition, Nokia Maps would be a fundamental part of the Microsoft mapping services and the development tools of Microsoft will be used for creating applications for Nokia windows phones.
