MNP, Mobile number portability again delayed rollout starts from November 25th

The Department of Telecom (DoT) will roll out the Mobile Number Portability(MNP) from November 25. Initially the service will be introduced in Haryana.

In a statement, the DoT said: ” The national wide launch of MNP services will start from the licensed area of Haryana on November 25, 2010 From that day Haryana customers will be able to switch service providers without changing their mobile number “.

The ministry had previously announced that MNP will be available to phone users from 1st November, but postponed to allow time for servive providers to “upgrade their network and other resources,” the statement said.

“Networks are now technically ready to launch the service. To facilitate a systematic and reliable introduction of MNP services, a proper migration plan was developed in consultation with mobile service providers (MSP),” said statement.

MNP is a service that allows mobile users to change his mobile operators while retaining the number.

Customers wishing to use the service should send SMS to the number 1900. Upon receipt of the transfer of code, customers must submit an application to transfer completely.

A period of four days was required for completion of porting (transferring) to the new mobile operator.

The MNP will be held in the rest of the country gradually. Implementation has been postponed already three times for different reasons. The MNP was initially to be implemented December 31, 2009 in all metro cities as well as in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

But the term was changed to March 31, 2010 and after June 30, 2010 due to lack of necessary infrastructure. The June 30 deadline was again postponed as operators were not ready with the infrastructure to provide the service.

Let’s hope atleast this time the government makes it.
